5 Things You Shouldn't Do With Clear Aligners Treatment

One of the reasons people prefer clear aligners is the convenience they offer. The trays can be taken off whenever you want, making brushing your teeth and eating easier and more comfortable. But, just because you can take them off as you please, it doesn't mean that you can do it too often.

This is just one example of things that you shouldn't do during clear aligner treatment. Keep reading if you want to learn more.

1. Don't Take Them Off Too Often

Sure, clear aligners are removable, but they are still meant to be worn between 20 and 22 hours every day.

The aligners need to put constant pressure on your teeth to correct their position. If you take them off too often, your progress will slow down. And, because your teeth aren't in the expected position, your new set of trays won't fit, which will delay the treatment timeline.

2. Don't Eat With Your Aligners On

You must take your aligners off every time you eat or drink anything other than that. Take them off even for small food items like sucking on a piece of candy or chewing some gum.

Two things can happen if you eat while wearing your aligners:

  • You risk damaging the trays
  • Food particles will get stuck between the aligners and your teeth, staining the trays and increasing your risk of decay.

The same is true for beverages. Colored, carbonated, or hot drinks will damage and stain your aligners.

3. Don't Damage Your Aligners

If you take the aligners off too often or you don't keep them in their protective case, you risk scratching or getting them dirty.

Always handle your aligners with care and store them according to your dentist's instructions. Rinse the trays before putting them back on and clean them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild toothpaste every night to keep them clean.

4. Don't Rush

We get that you may be getting impatient, especially if you are getting closer to the end of the treatment, but moving to the next set of aligners too quickly can lead to resorption or shrinkage. This can affect your teeth's stability and make them more likely to fall in the future.

5. Don't Neglect Your Oral Hygiene

The aligners may give you the false impression that your teeth are somewhat protected. They are not. A plaque still accumulates and needs to be removed through brushing and flossing.

Clean your teeth after every meal and before going to bed to avoid cavities during clear aligners treatment.
